About this course

English for IT B2 Upper-Intermediate | Course 1

English for IT B2 Upper-Intermediate | Course 1 is the first course in a two-part English for IT sequence for learners working toward CEFR B2 / Global Scale of English (GSE) 59–75. The course is for learners who already have B1-level English and want to build stronger English skills for IT study and work.

The English for IT B2 course sequence helps learners prepare for real communication in international, English-speaking, and multicultural IT environments.

This course is aimed at the following non-native English-speaking audiences:

  • students in high school, college, or university who want to study or work in IT;
  • early-career IT professionals who want to improve their English;
  • software developers, network engineers, security engineers, product managers, and IT support specialists;
  • IT specialists who want to work in international or English-speaking companies;
  • non-IT employees who work with technology teams and need stronger English communication skills.

The course develops practical English through realistic IT topics, including product management, network engineering, software engineering, customer support, and security engineering.

Learners practice grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, and workplace communication skills. They work with situations such as identifying problems, following instructions, analyzing technical information, asking customers questions, and discussing security issues.

  • Vocabulary & IT Context: User experience and supplier evaluation.
  • Skills: Identifying problems, causes, and possible solutions in product management.
  • Grammar: Emphatic do; dependent prepositions.
  • Listening: A conversation between a manager and a junior network engineer.
  • Reading: Networking job roles and responsibilities.
  • Skills: Understanding and following instructions in network engineering.
  • Grammar: Starting sentences with conjunctions; inversion; modal verbs for suggestions and advice.
  • Listening: A software engineer discussing the value of experience.
  • Reading: The benefits and drawbacks of compilers and interpreters.
  • Skills: Understanding factual information and discussing technical advantages and disadvantages.
  • Grammar: Adverbs for polite requests.
  • Vocabulary: Common English idioms used in workplace communication.
  • Listening: Customer support agents using idioms.
  • Reading: How to ask customers effective questions.
  • Skills: Finding key information and communicating clearly with customers.
  • Grammar: Imperative instructions; adverbs of possibility and probability.
  • Listening: A security engineer discussing fraudulent calls.
  • Reading: The need for an information security policy.
  • Skills: Talking about goals, instructions, and security rules in the workplace.
  • Grammar: Future perfect; the phrase was/were on the point of.
  • Listening: An interview with a security officer about roles and responsibilities.
  • Reading: The Pegasus software virus.
  • Skills: Taking part in discussions about cybersecurity roles, risks, and incidents.
